A Framework to Overcome Racism

This chapter summarizes the social-psychological and sociological theories of the previous four chapters to show how the white paradigm of white superiority, social structures (stereotypes, racist institutional practices, and disciplinary institutions), and individual actions work in coordination to preserve racism. It is argued that the social science theory developed since the 1960s provides a way to understand racism. With this understanding, we can develop strategies to end racism that would not have occurred to leaders of the civil rights movement. An anti-racist strategy includes celebrating the contributions of identity groups, addressing racist practices in institutions, converting disciplinary institutions into empowering institutions, and addressing stereotypes.
